My Traditional Kadazan Costume

I'm a very proud Sabahan. Also a very proud Kadazandusun.
For me, every 'Sumandak' (girl) should own at least one traditional costume of their ethnic.

In conjuction of the araimaitee aka Kaamatan month, May, I make this one for myself :)

:: My inspiration, the Kadazan-Penampang attire that i donned during my wedding two years ago ::
I'm not really from Penampang. My husband is. My dad side is from Dusun Tamparuli, while my mum's a Orang Sungai from Sugut.

I am very proud to be born in Borneo, a culture richness place, variety of ethnics/natives. One of my favourite local event is Unduk Ngadau, an annual beauty pageant, where all the beauties will donning a variety of traditional costumes. Check out this site to get a glimpse about this.

:: This is how i sew the darts ::

:: The gold trims with red ribbon as embellishment ::

I use McCall's 5483 from my shop to make the whole attire.

I use the vest B pattern and skirt C with some adjustments made.
Read my pattern review.
This is the garment before embellishment.

Overall, i'm very happy with it. It's not as perfect as the others, but at least i feel very proud wearing it. Feel good sewing... :)

  10. It's beautiful! And it doesn't look like a costume at all--if anything, it looks like a great outfit to wear for a dressy occasion! I enjoyed reading some more about your background and culture as well, so thank you for sharing.

i made one for myself when i was 15 for hari kebudayaan. hehe. but i just basically pasted golden colored strips of colored papers to the neck and front la to make it look kadazan-like. i think it worked pretty well! lol.

  18. Hi alviana,

It's really a beautiful costume you have there. I'm actually looking for the kadazan costume to wear to a function here in Singapore. I'm a Malaysian and part of the requirement is to wear a traditional costume on that day and i wore a kebaya last year. This year I'm thinking of other ethnic's costume that people are less aware of.

Would you be able to advise where I can get the costume & if you do tailoring?

    Thanks you.
